What is the Global Classroom?
Brings alive a country or region of the world to school children throughout Northeast Ohio.
Description
The program offerings are created to serve the goals and objectives of social studies curriculum and directly address standards, indicators and benchmarks. The program is focused primarily on grades 3, 6, and 9, is tailored for each grade level. This program is interdisciplinary and experiential, and involves all students in the class, not just the gifted. Teachers may select any or all of the activities from the listing below.
Program components:
- Selected resource materials (based on the packets prepared this year) as well as videos and field trips;
- Computer-based activities, lessons and research;
- Comparative media analysis – “as the world sees us”;
- International student mentors;
- Global email connection with a team of students in another country
- Video conference opportunities – for students to participate in as well as deliver a presentation
- Build a Culture Box - collect, identify and catalog a country's cultural artifacts
The program incorporates the following:
- Cooperative learning groups
- Experiential learning
- Involve the community
- Interdisciplinary-connect the study of geography, economics, culture, government and history
- Strong technology& information literacy component
- Opportunity to evaluate differing world views, and
- Foster research, critical thinking and communication skills
Grades: Elementary, Middle and High School - grades 3-12
Availability: Throughout the school year
International students, from a wide range of countries, studying at local colleges and universities are available to make presentations about their country to coordinate with lesson plans and teaching units
- Understand and appreciate similarities and differences among diverse cultures
- Students become more aware of their own culture
- Complement the curriculum with international perspectives
