The Saddam Hussein trial captured the world’s attention on many levels. For the first time in history in the Middle East, a head of state was prosecuted in a court of law. The Iraqi high tribunal established a judicial system that led the way to sweeping legal reform in Iraq. Throughout the process, the tribunal faced numerous political challenges. Judge Juhi was chief investigative judge of the special tribunal that tried Saddam, playing a pivotal role in establishing justice in Iraq and creating a relationship between the judicial system, the government, the ministry of justice, and the Iraqi people.

Judge Juhi has the perilous distinction of being the man who not only indicted Saddam Hussein but also grilled the former Iraqi president face-to-face in close quarters. He began his career as a criminal investigator, and was promoted to criminal judge under Saddam, while the Baathists were still in power, then was called upon by Iraqi Chief Judge to become Chief Judge of the Saddam Hussein trial. Currently, he is the Cox Center’s visiting jurist in residence and LL.M. Candidate, at Case Western Reserve University School of Law. Judge Juhi will share his experiences and insights in what promises to be a compelling evening.
